Which service do I need?

If you're unsure which service is right for your manuscript, don't worry. Simply get in touch and tell me where you are in your writing journey. I'll be happy to recommend the service that best suits your needs.

I also offer a free sample edit of up to 1,000 words, giving you the opportunity to see how I work before deciding to work together.

Do you offer sample edits?

Yes, if you are receiving a copyedit, I will request a section, up to 1000 words where I will use track changes to edit and let you see my process and ensure that you are happy with it before proceeding. If I am proofreading for you, it is unlikely that in 1000 words, especially from earlier chapters (as you will usually work on these in the most detail and therefore they will contain less errors) you will see my process well. In this case, I am happy for you to send me a section from another area of your manuscript which you have deliberately added some errors into for me to show you my process.

I am more than happy to answer any questions after you receive your sample edit before proceeding. The main thing I am concerned with is that you trust me, my process and are happy with the service you receive.

Do you provide a style sheet?

If I am copyediting for you, yes, I will provide a style sheet. For proofreading, I will not provide a style sheet but I am happy to work from one if you have had your manuscript previously edited and received one from your previous editor. If you do not have a style sheet, I will use standard proofreading rules, but I am happy to have a consultation, if you wish, to discuss any stylistic preferences you have, before I begin.

Do I have to take your recommendations?

Absolutely not. The manuscript is yours and whilst I will give my professional recommendations, the decision is ultimately yours as to whether you make the changes or not. I am always happy to answer any questions about the suggestions I have made and I promise I will never take offence if you decide against my suggestions. If we both wrote the same book, they would be different in so many ways and just because I think something should read a certain way, does not make it necessarily right for your book. I will always work with you to make the book the best it can be, but will never lose your voice. You are the story teller, I am just the polisher and sometimes some sentences need a little dirt!

Do you use AI?

No. I will never use generative AI to edit, produce feedback or write beta reading reports. All edits are completed by me and your manuscript will never be uploaded to any AI system.
